A Wizards Spell Gypsy Horse Ranch in Burleson, Texas is a very unusual place. It is home to many World Show Champion Gypsy Horses, both full size and the newest "Miniature Gypsies" from England and Ireland. But the thing that makes its owner the happiest is the Veteran (and others) Equine Therapy program.

There are many types of equine therapy, but the method used at A Wizards Spell does not involve riding. All work is with the horses on the ground, in-hand, and occasionally driving. The handling of a horse releases Oxytocin, Endorphines, and Dopamine into your brain. These are the "feel good/calm down" chemicals. There is a stress relief that happens each time you bond with one of the Gypsies at this ranch. Brushing, scratching, petting, and generally loving on these amazing horses causes this feeling. For Veterans (and others) facing PTSD, traumatic brain injury, stress/anxiety, and potential suicide intervention, this is the peaceful, tranquil environment with an absence of confrontational or upsetting activities.

This ranch is very different using of newborn foals.

Another thing that makes this ranch very different is the use of newborn foals in the program. Owner, Linda Brown, says "I have had many breeds of horses over the years and Gypsies are the first I would ever consider using young foals in and being so trusting of them."

This ranch did not start off as a source of therapy. It was at the Fort Worth Stock Show one year that this discovery was made. While showing off and discussing the breed with the many attendees, a man with a group of four other men asked if they could go in with the horses. Linda Brown agreed and handed them brushes assuming they would be in and out in five minutes since there are so many activities at the Stock Show. She continued talking to other attendees but watching over her shoulder she wondered why they were still in the stall 15 minutes later. Soon the one man asked if they could come to the ranch some time. Linda asked them what their interest was. He explained that the other four men were having PTSD attacks from the crowds, noise, and activities and needed a quiet spot to remove themselves from the source of pressure. And the horses were it. Linda didn't know much about the military but agreed to have them come visit in the future. It snowballed after Veterans telling friends who told friends, to the point that at one time an event had 39 Veterans in attendance on a misty cold day. After seeing the transformations it was clear that this was a needed therapy and shortly the 501(c)3, Surmounters of Texas, was formed. That was six years ago. All sessions for Veterans and their families are free.
