The Best of The 2012 San Antonio Stockshow for Horsemen

The 2012 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, February 9-26, will feature a wide array of competitions and attractions sure to appeal to horsemen and their families.

In the climate controlled arenas of the Expo Hall this year, exhibitors will once again be showing their finest horses as they compete for scholarships, buckles, and prize money.

The show’s run opens with a world class NCHA Cutting, with $65,000 in added money and a Mercuria NCHA World Series of Cutting. Also featured are the popular double judged/double points Quarter Horse, Paint Horse, and Versatility Ranch Horse shows. All breeds of horses will compete in the Open Show, and the Donkey & Mule show promises crowds a delightful look at donkeys and mules. Speed will reign in the Barrel Racing show, with $17,000 in added money over two full days of cloverleaf patterns and poles. Team Penners travel to San Antonio for the USTPA show, known to be one of the fastest and most exciting team pennings anywhere with $10,000 added.

The popular horse sales known as “The San Antonio Weekend” return once again with the Select Horse Sale and Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale February 17-19. More than 300 quality Quarter Horses and Paint Horses will be sold to buyers seeking top bloodlines and one of the largest selections of color anywhere.

New this year, the Horse Skillathon is a contest designed for students to showcase their knowledge of horses and the horse industry. Contestants will combine book knowledge, hands-on experience and the ability to communicate knowledge of industry issues. Other horse contests for youth include the Horse Judging Contest on February 16 and the Horse Bowl on February 17.

Closing out the Expo Hall this year is the very popular Ranch Rodeo on February 26, featuring the South Texas Ranch Rodeo finalists as ranch teams battle for the champion title.

Youth exhibitors have the opportunity to win $150,000 in scholarships offered in Horse Show events. Late entries are still being accepted in most Horse Show events.  For complete details on all Horse Show competitions, visit sarodeo.com.

Horse Discovery is located in the Expo Hall and open every day of the show from 9:00am – 7:00pm.   Featured daily displays include live horses, interactive games, videos on horse judging, breed information, and interactive learning stations.

An excellent variety of horses will be displayed in Horse Discovery, featuring the crowd-pleasing and versatile Gypsy Horses.  Naturally gaited Peruvian horses will be present, along with miniature horses and Arabian horses in full native costume. Visitors also won’t want to miss the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo’s own grand entry horses, the Palomino Patrol.

During clinics and seminars, equine professionals will share their knowledge of horse training, equine massage, horsemanship, veterinary care, and more.  Live horse demonstrations will highlight the trainability, versatility and athleticism of horses as they perform obstacle challenges.  Vaulting demonstrations will show the gymnastic talents of horse and rider teams.
